OOTD: What's your Business Casual?

The first time I was introduced to wearing professional business attire was during my sophomore year of high school. I used to be part of an after-school banking class where we learned the basics of how to count money and be a successful teller. We even had the opportunity to intern at a bank for high school credit, which I thought was pretty cool. I remember there was one day where my teacher had each of us come dressed in our professional attire and had us walk in front of the classroom. She pointed out the "do's" and "don'ts" of our outfit.

She would tell us:
Don't wear shiny or baggy pants
Don't wear blouses that are see through or show cleavage
Don't wear open-toed shoes or tennis shoes
Don't look like you just rolled out of bed

Do look clean cut/shaven
Do wear a collared shirt/polo/blouse
Do wear close-toed shoes
Do look presentable

It was a nerve-wrecking but helpful experience.

As a young professional, it's important to know what to wear to work because it tells employers who you are and demonstrates to them that you are serious about what you are doing. Whether you are working for a non-profit agency or in a corporate business setting, there's always a "go to" style required.

At the moment, I'm currently working for a social service agency so I always hear the term "business casual" around the office. What exactly is business casual? Is it more business-y than casual?

A had a few co-workers and friends shared with me what business casual means to them, and their looks are shown, here.

Name: Hayley
Where you work: Non-profit agency

What does business casual mean to you?
Appropriate work attire but comfortable. [Something] nice enough to wear to work, nothing fancy.

Where do you usually shop?
Old Navy

What is your "Go To" outfit?
I would say my outfit gets better as the week progresses. I usually wear some comfy slacks that are stretchy, a patterned, sheer, or solid colored blouse, flats, and a tote bag.

Name: Aly
Where you work: Non-profit agency

What does business casual mean to you?
Clothing that you can wear that is presentable at a meeting. Something that versatile, you can wear out and at the office

Do you think there is a lot of confusion when people think about what business casual is?
Yes, because there are different perception of what it means. It may mean more casual or more formal for some.

Where do you usually shop?
Ideally at Gap or Banana Republic. If I am on a budget I shop at Old Navy and/or Target.

What is your "Go To" outfit?
I choose my outfit depending on the shoes I'm wearing. I like Old Navy pixie pants, button down shirts and sweaters. Depending on the type of job or environment you're working in, such as with preschool age kids and/or families, dresses and skirts are not ideal.

Name: Sebastian
Where you work: Bank of America

What does business casual mean to you?
To me business casual means tie and jacket optional. You have some leeway to have a little fun with the pants, pocket square, and maybe even throw in a vest. At the same time, you should still have on some nice dress shoes and tucked in dress shirt to give off the business vibe.

What is your "Go To" outfit?
An outfit you could wear to the office and your local bar after without having to go home to change.

Do you think there is a lot of confusion when people think about what business casual is?
I think business casual gets confusing based on the industry you are in. Business casual might be a bit different for someone who works in Wall Street as opposed to someone who works in the tech/app industry. Jeans and a blazer might be considered business casual in the tech industry but not so much in the finance industry.

Name: Fatima (yours truly)
Where you work: Social Service

What does business casual mean to you?
An outfit that makes you feel and look professional in and out of the office.

What is your "Go To" outfit?
I usually stick with dark colored pants since they match well with anything. I accompany that with a colorful blouse and a solid or multicolored cardigan!

Where do you usually shop?
I like shopping at Target, H&M, Goodwill, and DSW.

On The Streets: Weekend in Minnesota

This past weekend has been filled with memorable road trips and fun adventures. One of my boyfriend's friends, J.L. came to visit us from California....Yay, our first visitor! Since my boyfriend's birthday was last week J.L. and I had planned a birthday surprise for him. So we packed our bags and set out on our 5 1/2 hour road trip to Minnesota to meet with him.

Once we arrived, we called my boyfriend to pick us up. My boyfriend was definitely surprised to see J.L! I could imagine the song "reunited and it feels so go", playing in the background. Then there was more exciting news! My boyfriend told us that he got two pairs of tickets to go to a Minnesota Twins baseball game! I have only been to one major league baseball game in my life which was for the Dodgers two years ago, so I was pretty excited for this! There is something about watching a live baseball game that makes it a special experience. Here are some pictures I took at the game!!

The Minnesota Twins game are held at the Target Center in Minneapolis. It's such a huge stadium!

Check us out! Hay!!

I loved the energy people had whenever the Chicago Cubs (whom the Twins were playing against) and the Minnesota Twins would hit the ball. My favorite part was watching people on the "Kiss Cam" or big screen dancing and cheering, it was totally great!  At the end of the game, the final score was 2-7 Minnesota Twins winning the game. And did I mention it was fireworks night! It was a great way to end our first night in Minnesota!

Day 2

The second day was even more spectacular because I got to accompany my boyfriend to work an event. The event was called MSRA Back to the Fifties Weekend. From what my boyfriend told me, he said it's a huge event that happens every year filled with classic cars and hot rods. He wasn't kidding when he said it was a huge event, cause when we got there we saw rows and rows of cars starting to line up. The event pretty much covered a good chunk of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds with about 11,995 participants. Crazy right!?

There was so many vendor booths, people dressed up in retro fashion, and of course cars of all shapes and models that I just had to take a whole bunch of pictures!

Spider Mobile!

Happy couple!

Well hello there!

At the end of the day I felt like I had completed an entire workout from just walking everywhere. There were so many cars to see that I don't think I got to see all of them. Regardless, I was happy that I got to experience it with great company!

On our way back to Omaha, I asked J.L. what he thought about Minnesota. He said he really liked it! Thanks Minnesota for the awesome adventures...until next time!

Fati's Favorites: Pintate tus uñas con Sinful Colors Nail Polish

Hola chicas! I hope everyone is having a great work week. I've been trying to keep up with my personal and professional stuff aka life, that I have not been able to update the blog :<. But in the midst of it being a busy work week for me, I wanted to share with you all an activity that I enjoy doing to keep me stress-free.

One of my favorite things to do on my down time is paint my nails. I love love love looking up nail designs or nail art on Pinterest and try to re-create my own patterns like flowers, zigzag lines, or even paint my nails a different color for a more far out look; un poquito de todo. What I love about painting my nails is that I can express myself through different colors and I love seeing people's reaction to them. I also have a bad habit of biting my nails, so it helps and prevents me from doing that.

When I was younger my nail biting habit was really bad. If I got stressed over a project or I got really nervous over something I would start biting them. I don't know what it was but it helped me to calm down for the most part even though it's disgusting. The funny thing is that I would turn away so my mom wouldn't see me. Then, at the corner of my eye I could see my mom watching me and she would soon spot me and tell me jokingly in Spanish, "porque no te pones chile en tus uñas para que no te las comes" ("why don't you put chile on your nails so you won't bite them"). Thinking about it now, I would rather have nail polish over chile on my nails any day. So I started collecting nail polish.

I remember back in high school I would always stop by Sally's Beauty Supply on my way home and buy their mini nail polishes because they were so cute and mini and only a buck! I would always walk out with three colors: black, bright pink, and a clear coat. Nowadays, I find myself having a zip-lock bag full of colorful nail polishes. So many colors to choose from you just gotta have them all!

My favorite nail polish brand at the moment is Sinful Colors

What I like about Sinful Colors is their wide variety of colors and how affordable they are (no more than $2). Whenever I walk into a Walgreens my first pit stop is to the nail polish section to see what new colors they've come out with. They have colors for different holidays like Christmas or Halloween and limited edition colors for each season. Their colors are long-lasting and last for about a week or more without chipping.

They are a great travel item when you are on the go and goes well with any outfit!

Buy your own set of Sinful Colors at your local Walgreens, Target, and other beauty supply stores.

Dresses are a Girls Best Friend

This weekend has been really great. My boyfriend and I invited some of our friends over to our house and we had a mini barbeque. After a long busy week of working and commuting, it felt great to kick back and relax with great company and great food. I even got to wear my new dress that I bought at a local dress shop here in Omaha called Hello Holiday

Do you ever get that excited feeling whenever you find something that you just gotta have? There was something special about this dress that made me want to buy it from the start. I really liked the gradient pattern and how simple yet elegant it looked. But most of all, I really liked the way it fit. In the past I used to wear those bodycon dresses whenever I would go out clubbing with friends and I didn't mind the tight fit at the time, but now whenever I look at dresses I want something that I can feel and look comfortably in.

Here are some awesome photos that my boyfriend took on a fun photo-shoot!

Hello Holiday has a lot of cute dresses and outfits to choose from! Visit their website and social media pages to see more!

You'll never know what awesome things you may find, until you find it!

Outfit of the Day: Styling Patterned Pants (ft. Guest Blogger MariChuy Rodriguez)

Whenever I think about patterned pants I always think about the fashion and style trends inspired by the early eras, like the 1960's-1980's. The bold colors and unique prints and patterns create that everlasting impression that someday you will want to buy a pair because they look so cool!

One thing I love about wearing patterned pants is the different outfits and looks you can create with them. Here are a few styling tips for when you're at the office and a fun night out with friends!

At The Office

Ever since I started working in an office space I have been having a lot of fun putting outfits together. Seeing how I work in a business casual environment, I am able to add some spunk to what I wear and yet look professional. There are some places that may have strict dress codes, so it just depends on what you can and cannot wear to work. I usually wear a solid colored blouse or like in this picture a striped collared shirt with a cardigan over it. There's something about adding a cardigan to an outfit that makes your outfit look business-y. I like the fact that these pants are really comfortable to wear and the patterns are pretty simple. I bought my pants from Target. They have a great selection of patterned and printed pants to choose from.

Nigh Out With Friends

Going out with friends is always a great time because you're able to dress up the way you want and have more of a casual look. For my outfit, I kept my patterned pants and styled it with a black top. Sometimes I even do some color blocking and wear a colored shirt to make my outfit pop, depending on the mood or the look I am going for. Since I had been wearing flats all day, I decided to go with some Converse. And lastly, I covered it up with a denim jacket. I feel like the denim jacket gives the outfit a rocker/edgy look to it.

There are more ways you can style a pair of patterned pants. My guest blogger for the week, MariChuy Rodriguez from The Real MariChuy has her own ways she styled her pants for  when she is at the office and a night out with her friends. Follow her blog for more fabulous styling tips and inspiration and ways how you can wear your own pair of patterned pants!

A Runner's Guide:

Running is about preparation and practice. It's about seeing how far or fast you can go without stopping. It's about having fun and accomplishing that personal goal.

My personal goal this past week has been to run a mile or so for at least 30 minutes, non stop. It was kind of hard since I haven't ran in a while, so I just walked most of the time. I usually start off with a simple jog or walk around the track to warm up and then start to run. It's all about those baby steps!

But before I start doing any of that, I wanna take a step back and share some helpful running essentials.

Wearing comfortable clothes is always helpful when you are doing something active. Since work out clothes are meant to be light-weight you are able to be more flexible and some are even sweat resistant. I usually stick with a good ol' cotton t-shirt and some yoga pants.

For all you shoe lovers out there, shoes are a basic necessity no doubt about that. But finding the right shoe for your feet is important, because not all shoes are going to fit the same, in my opinion. I remember in high school I had some running shoes that had air things on the heel and it was just uncomfortable to run with them.

To find the right shoe you gotta take into consideration what surface you are running on such as on a track, on the road, on a trail, or even a treadmill. They are all important because of the footwork that you do, going up and down. I recently started wearing Nike running shoes. I find them to be really comfortable and give a lot of support to my feet since I do a lot of running on the sidewalk and on the track. They are also really light and it has a cushion for your heel, so that's a plus!

Water is important regardless if you are doing something active or not. It's good to keep your body hydrated with fluids continuously. Protein shakes are also helpful to keep your body moving and energized.

Having a good playlist is a good companion when working out. It's a way to keep motivated and engaged with whatever you are doing. I find Pandora radio to be my best friend when I am on the go.

What types of things do you use when you are exercising?
